AGRO CAN BOOST INDIA'S GDP/CHEMICAL INDUSTRY: GUJARAT SHOWS THE WAY

For almost a decade,agriculture in Gujarat has grown almost at 10%. If Gujarat pattern is repeated all over India, it should be possible for India to have overall 10% GDP growth. It will also mean big boost to Chemical Industry since it will mean considerable increase in production and use of fertilizers, plastics for drip irrigation , etc. But before we come to Gujarat story, let us review India's agro sector.status today.Civilization started when mankind started agriculture and Indian agriculture has a history of more than 10,000 years(l). Today, India ranks 2nd in farm output. However, for it, it employs 52% of the work force , but contributes only 17% to GDP and therefore it is a drag on the Indian economy. If Indian GDP has to catch up, the contribution of agriculture to Indian economy has toincrease and population dependent on agriculture should not only be drastically be reduced but also be redeployed in manufacturing etc.
