Long-acting intramuscular naltrexone reduces heavy drinking in alcohol-dependent patients over six months, trial data suggest.Compared with placebo, heavy drinking decreased by 25 per cent in the high-dose (380mg) naltrexone group (P=0.03) and by 17 per cent in the low-dose (190mg) naltrexone group (P=0.07).The treatment effect was greater in men and those who abstained pre-treatment (JAMA 2005;293:1617).
