Last month, the Department of Health consulted various interested parties on proposals around the establishment of NICE - the National Institute for Clinical Excellence - which, in the words of Mr Frank Dobson (Secretary of State for Health), "goes live in April". In a signed foreword to the consultation document, "Fster access to modern treatment: how NICE appraisal will work", Mr Dobson says NICE will "command the respect of doctors, nurses and other clinical professionals and provide authoritative guidance on what treatment works best for patients...NICE will help end the unacceptable geographical variations in care...Equally, by sorting out the wheat from the chaff, it will protect patients from outdated and inefficient treatment."
