Prominent along the roadside I recently encountered a clump of the striking plant generally known as germander speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys) but in some areas called bright eye or bird's eye.Its petals, normally a deep blue, are occasionally lilac or pink, and have a white centre which certainly suggests an observing eye.In Ireland the blooms were once sewn on to travellers' clothing to ensure a welcome wherever they went.
