Tuberculosis has been around since 8,000BC (skeletal deformities caused by TB have been identified),but the disease reached epidemic proportions in western Europe in the early 19th century when industiralisation fulled a massive growth in the urban poor population.It is estimated that one-third of all deaths in London during the first 40 years of the 19th century were as a result of TB.
