Laser now has tapping tools

Mazak Optonics Corp. has announced that its FabriGear cutting lasers, which were designed specifically for single-setup processing of tube, pipe, and structural components, can be ordered with a tapping tool system. The tapping system is intended to provide greater flexibility and reduce non-value-added time. This function is suitable for a variety of pipe shapes, including round, square, rectangular, and triangular, as well as C, L, H, and I beams. The tapping unit contains six positions for taps in inch sizes from No. 5 to Vi in. and metric sizes from M3 to M12. The drive system uses a servomotor for tap rotation and Z-axis travel for true "rigid" tapping characteristics. Standard features include automatic breakage detection; an automatic tap paste applicator; and air blast capability for removing chips that accumulate on the tap.
