Many factors structure communities of small mammals including predation (Kotler 1984), competition (Price, 1978; Brown and Munger, 1985), and resource utilization and needs. Microhabitat partitioning contributes to the coexistence of sympatrically occurring rodent species (Price, 1978); however, the mechanism or correlates of microhabitat partitioning among closely related rodent species is not always clear. Thus, quantifying potential variables responsible for the distribution and abundance of species is important for advancements in community ecology.
