摘要

In the early 60s, estates in Malaysia were still very much the same units that they had been before the war. Estates were more or less complete units on their own. Each made its own electricity, pumped its own water, ran its own school and often had its own hospital. The races that made up the workforce were in many cases treated differently in that the Indian labourers were usually directly employed and Chinese worked through contractors; the Indians being resident and the Chinese living out of theestate in the new villages.
