The Europeans who brought tobacco from the Americas six hundred years ago did not know that they had caused so much pleasure, and yet so much addiction. I did not know how bad smoking could be until I read an article in a Readers Digest issue when said that nicotine is extremely addictive, more so than drugs. So it was a wonder that I did give it up eventually.Soon after I tried smoking, I had to have a cigarette after a meal, and it was a real pleasure to draw on it. Without it, I felt restless. Later I had to bear the pain when I wanted to stop.
