WIND whipped through Josh Charlton's hunting jacket. The lanky 14-year-old scanned the fields of Goose Lake Valley in southern Oregon's high desert. It was late April 2003, cold and wet. Josh glanced at his watch: 3:45. His older brothers, Jake and Farron, were due home from school in 15 minutes, and they'd be expecting his help feeding the livestock and starting dinner. He hadn't wanted anyone to know he'd been out hunting alone and now he'd have to rush to get back.
