The Aluminum Industry, is a major consumer of refractories. In the United States 1 it is the second largest metal producer following steel. Because aluminum melts at a relatively low temperature (Figure 1) the refractory selection for use in secondary aluminum furnaces is often considered to be an easy application compared to that of other processes, but as anybody who has worked in the area can attest, it presents its own challenges.
