The systematic position and nature of the erstwhile ocypodid subfamily Macrophthalminae is reviewed; annotated keys to the macrophthalmid subfamilies and genera and to the extant species of the type genus Macrophthalmus are provided; and the subgeneraand species groups of Macrophthalmus are described and discussed.
