A NEW SPECIES OF MACROPHTHALMUS DESMAREST, 1823 (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA: BRACHYURA: MACROPHTHALMIDAE) FROM BOHOL ISLAND, THE PHILIPPINES

Many new taxa have already been described as a result of the PANGLAO 2004 Marine Biodiversity Project. We report a new species of the ocypodoid crab genus Macrophthalmus Desmarest from the Philippines. Macrophthalmus pentaodon, new species, can be distinguished from other species in the genus primarily by the presence of five anterolateral teeth on the carapace, the greatest known so far in the genus, and by its steeply oblique upper orbital margins. It can be further distinguished from closely allied species by its smaller size and shorter ocular peduncles.
