Helical CT Findings of Tuboovarian Abscess

Tuboovarian abscess (TOA) is the end stage of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The symptoms and signs of TOA are similar to those of PID and include pelvic pain and fever, but these nonspecific features make the diagnosis of TOA difficult. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by transabdominal or transvaginal sonography, but when these are nondiagnostic and the symptoms are nonspecific, helical CT can be a valuable imaging aid. This article reviews the CT findings of TOA and other gynecologic diseases that may mimic it on imaging studies.
