Traditionally, Instrumentation and Control Systems development had been focused on the continuous process industries, such as Oil and Gas, Petroleum Refining, Fertilizer manufacturing, Chemicals, Power Generation and so on. Hence today there is plenty of knowledge and expertise in the Instrumentation and Controls related to these applications. However compared to the above sectors, industries like Pharmaceuticals, Paints, Agrochemicals, specialty chemicals, lubricants, oil additives, dairy and food, etc. have a large number of processes that operate in a "batch" mode, not a continuous mode. The Instrumentation and Process Control requirements for these processes are completely different. But the techniques for control of batch processes had not developed to the same extent (as was the case for continuous processes) until the past two decades or so.
