How often have you come back from a two-week break saying, "I need a holiday?" Getting away from it all is meant to be relaxing but long-distance travel, an indifferent hotel and rubbish food can sometimes lead to nothing but stress. What's more, thetraditional package deal is hardly eco-friendly. Factor in flights, transfers and a purpose-built concrete complex, and the result is a carbon footprint nightmare. So how can we have a summer break without costing the earth? The first place to start is our own backyard because home-grown holidays will cut CO_2 emissions in one go, especially if travelling by train. The variety on offer is stunning: from holidaying on an organic farm to kayaking in Scotland or walking in Wales.
