Lung cancer diagnosis: When speed wins the day

The uptake of smoking among women during World War il has been predicted to result, after a time lag, in a rise of deaths from lung cancer, mirroring previous trends seen in men. In light of this fact, the Annals of Oncology report in January, 2015, of an ecological study highlighting a predicted rise in the rate of lung cancer deaths in European women in 2015 is timely. While the rates of lung cancer in men declined, a 9% increase to 14-24 per 100000 women was modelled using data from WHO and Eurostat databases, with the absolute numbers of deaths approaching those seen for breast cancer.
