Steelmakers Ask Government to Extend Import Duty Reduction and Exemption Period for Factory Automation Equipment

As the expiry date of the government's custom duty reduction and exemption system for the local steelmakers imports of factory automation equipment, which was put into operation in 1990 to get effective until the end of 2005 is getting closer, steelmakers asked the government to extend the period of the system. Most overseas large-size steelmakers are increasing their production capacity and sharpening their competitive edges in quality and production cost through the continuous investments in new facilities in order to take a leading position in controlling global steel market. Particularly, a fast growth in China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East is analyzed to be working as a major threatening factor to local steel industry.
