Amid a slump in demand for steel pipes, pneumatic garbage collection system is attracting attention as a new consuming sector of steel pipes. The pneumatic garbage collection, which means that the garbage is transported pneumatically from the place where it is created in underground pipes to a centralized collection terminal, where it is introduced and compacted in hermetically closed containers, before the final transport to the site of disposal, has been developed in order to make an improvement in environmental hygiene from the current method of collecting garbage by trucks in front of houses. At present, about 600 sets of automatic garbage collection facilities are in operation all over the world, and the application of those facilities to the new residential areas has been generalized particularly in Sweden, Spain and Japan.
