Patients with completely resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) benefit from cisplatin-based chemotherapy if theirtumoursdo not have the excision repair cross-complementing 1 (ERCC1) protein, report the International Lung Cancer Trial (IALT). The researchers assessed ERCC1 expression in 761 resected tumours and calculated a score based on the percentage of positive tumour nuclei and staining intensity. 335 (44%) patients had a score of 1-0 or greater and were therefore classified as positive. Survival was significantly longer in the chemotherapy group than in the observation group in patients with ERCC1-negative tumours (adjusted hazard ratio 0-67; 95% Cl 0-51-0-89); but not in those with ERCCl-positive tumours (1-18; 0-87-1-61).
