Cancer clusters: how can we improve understanding?

Rarely a week goes by without yet another alarmist report on a suspected cancer cluster and many of these news stories originate from Australia. In the past year alone, cancer clusters have been reported in the media in Australian firefighters, railyard workers, hospital workers, broadcasters, airport workers, school children, and mechanics. The stories themselves often provide scant detail and little context for the reader, and public confusion and concern ensue in their wake.
