Koch's postulates set the standard of diagnostics in the 19th century, and for the most part these principles remained cogent for well over 100 years. For parasitic diseases like schistosomiasis the somewhat lack of sensitivity has been a dilemma, particularly through the mid-20th century when physicians encountered the infection in settlers and immigrant populations in southern Africa,1 and Egyptians living with the parasites sought to deal with the health problems.
