The international community has overcome many obstacles in making antiretroviral drugs for HIV available worldwide, but drug resistance in treatment-naive individuals has become an important implementation challenge. The subject of many recent reports, worries abound that pretreatment resistance is related to treatment failure and that further increases in pretreatment resistance might jeopardise the global response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
