Variability is a fundamental tendency in biological phenomena. Even in a single population, males often adopt two (or more) discrete behavioural patterns to obtain mates. Such "alternative reproductive behaviours (or tactics)" comprise a multiplicityof distinct phenomena, and the mechanisms which favour the evolution and maintenance of a behavioural polymorphism within a population are highly diverse and little understood (Austad, 1984; Dominey, 1984).
