Evolutionary dynamics of self-incompatibility systems in flowering plants

Perhaps half of all species of flowering plants ex-press sonic form of self-incompatibility (SI), which discourages self-fertilization (de Nettancourt 1977). In a number of systems, genetic regulators of the various physiological processes involved in SI segregate as a single unit, the S-locus, which encodes SI specificities. Receipt of pollen that express specificities held in common with the seed parent induces a rejection response. Under sporophytic SI (SSI), pollen specificity is determined by the genome of the pollen parent; under gametophylic SI (CSI), by the pollen genome. I describe some evolutionary consequences of the differences in pollination success engendered by SI.
