BALB/c mice have a low in vitro fertilization rate. Taurine (1 or 10 mM) did not change the proportion of BALB/c spermatozoa capacitated in vitro. However, 1 mM taurine significantly (P<0.05) improved the fertilization rate of spermatozoa compared with that of control spermatozoa not exposed to taurine. The highest fertilization rate (78%) was obtained by addition of 1 mM taurine to TYH medium. Taurine had no effect on embryo development. The viability of fertilized embryos produced using taurine treatment was demonstrated by embryo transfer to ICR recipient mice.
