GFP is responsible for the green bioluminescence from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. Since the report by Chalfie et al. in 1994 (Chalfie et al., 1994), GFP has been used as a new vital marker in various heterologous systems because of its nature that absorbs blue light and emits green fluorescence without exogenous substrates or cofactors (Cubitt et al., 1995). Recently, we produced GFP expressing transgenic mice and described the ready detection of green fluorescence in living tissues (Dcawa et al., 1995). Since the time of our initial work, various mutant GFPs with modified spectra, an increased extinction coefficient, and codon-optimization have been developed. We therefore compared their utility as a marker in transgenic mice.
