The Human Condition

Last month I drove to Venice, Louisiana, with my girlfriend. Our intentions were clear when we left New Orleans: support the economy, sample the seafood and talk with the residents of the area who were suffering most from the BP oil spill. Due to cable news, we imagined a village of depressed and angry people looking for shoulders to cry on and customers to spend money. What we found could not have been more different. We pulled up to the Venice Marina just as a local band was kicking off a free concert. The tables all around us were filled with fishermen, cleanup workers and newscasters all reveling in the Thursday night drink specials. After a couple of seafood po'boys and a few hours of live music, we said goodnight to our fellow patrons.
