Anaphylactoid Reaction to Oral Contrast for Computed Tomography

Administration of intravenous and oral contrast before the radiographic imaging of the traumatized patient is widely accepted. Despite many reports of reactions to intravenous contrast, only a single previous case of a life-threatening reaction to the oral contrast agent diatrizoate meglumine and diatrizoate sodium solution has been reported. We present the first reported case of a severe anaphylactoid reaction following oral ingestion of water-soluble, iodinated contrast in a patient following blunt trauma, captured on videotape during routine performance improvement monitoring.
