Intraoperative sonography for detection of contralateral acute epidural or subdural hematoma after decompressive surgery.

We read with great interest the article by Su et al.1 entitled "Con-tralateral Acute Epidural Hematoma after Decompressive Surgery of Acute Subdural Hematoma: Clinical Features and Outcome". This article addresses a rare but important problem that might occur after decompressive surgery. The study recommended that in patients with acute subdural hematoma (SDH) and a contralateral skull fracture, an immediate postoperative computed tomography (CT) scan is indicated to evaluate this rare but potentially lethal complication. According to the findings of the postoperative CT scan, the neurosurgeon can then formulate an appropriate treatment strategy without delay. Early detection and prompt treatment may improve the outcome in this group of patients.
