The function τ (n) The 'divisors' of n are the positive integers (including 1 and n itself) that divide into n. We will denote by r (n) the number of these divisors. (This notation owes its origin to the German 'Teiler'; English speakers often use d (n), but in my view the letter d is in far too much demand to be tied up in this way!)
