When should students be eligible for certification?

There is an increasing number of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) postbaccalaureate programs for entry into advanced practice. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) fully supports the evolution, of NP education from master's to doctoral education. In August 2008, NONPF published Eligibility for NP Certification for Nurse Practitioner Students in Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs.1 This document was developed in response to members wanting to know at what point should students be eligible for national certification. The document was written to serve as a guide during this transitional time with both master's and doctoral NP programs.
