NWT spending spree goes on, Snap Lake almost ready

Exploration and deposit appraisal spending for 2007 in the N.W.T., as posted by Natural Resources Canada, reached 191.6 million dollars. The number is up about 15 million dollars from 176.2 million dollars in 2006. The N.W.T. remains behind Ontario, B.C., Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Nunavut in terms of exploration spending. Commodity prices in 2007 remained elevated and continued to encourage exploration for diamonds, precious and base metals, and uranium in the N.W.T. The Northwest Territories' third diamond mine, De Beers Canada's Snap Lake project, is on target to reach full commercial production by mid-2008; bulk sampling took place on diamond and polymetallic properties; new resource calculations were given for gold and lead-zinc projects; feasibility studies were undertaken on a tungsten project and another on a lead-zinc property; and grassroots base metal and uranium exploration continued.
