In 2007, the exploration industry invested about 32 million dollars searching for metallic minerals compared with 13.4 million dollars in 2006; 36 million dollars was spent seeking natural gas compared with 44 million dollars last year. Nearly 17,300 claims were staked in New Brunswick in 2007 compared with 4,100 in 2006. The number of mineral claims in good standing at the end of 2007 was about 36,500, up from 21,275 in the previous year. This amount of claims has not been seen in New Brunswick since the Bathurst staking rush of the early 1950s.
