The Hartford public school system served an urban, predominantly low-income community comprising 24,479 students in the 2004-2005 school year. The school system has 26 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 6 host magnet schools, and 6 other school sites, including transitional learning and adult education. Forty registered nurses (RNs, 8 advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs, and 19 nursing assistants serve these schools. The nursing department of the Hartford school system also includes a nurse who delivers services to 2 private Catholic elementary schools. Although the exact ratio varies from school to school and year to year, the overall ratio of students to nursing staff (including RNs, APRNs, and nursing assistants is approximately 429:1. The student body is 53% Hispanic and 40% black. More than 95% of the student body qualified for free or reduced-price meals during the 2004-2005 school year.
