Unfortunately, we still see many gunshot wounds affecting our young population. McAninch et al. reported on a single-institution series of 50 patients (median age, 25 years; range, 3-53 years) that endured a gunshot wound to the lower urinary tract with a mean of 2.3 bullets (range, 1-8 bullets) per patient. Not surprisingly, most of these patients were managed operatively, with the exception of one patient. The findings of this study are salient to the damaging effect of this type of trauma that often affects different system organs (concurrent gastrointestinal injury in 80% of cases), demanding a combined multispecialty trauma team approach. Urologists must be aware of common sites of injury during surgical exploration well described in the article, including the bladder (72%), ureter (20%), and urethra (8%).
