Recent developments in semiconductor resistance heating elements suggest the possibility of expanded capabilities for ground-based wind tunnel simulation of new and existing flight systems. An existing facility compressor system will be used as the basis for a discussion of some of the enhanced capabilities for both atmospheric flight replication and for heat-transfer and materials testing. Preliminary results indicate that flight temperatures, pressures and speeds can be duplicated in a continuous-flow wind tunnel for Mach numbers of about 7, and that dramatic increases in heat-transfer rates are possible. This paper discusses the interaction of power levels, temperature levels, pressure levels and compressor plant characteristics. Preliminary heat-transfer analysis indicates that the desired conditions can be achieved within the anticipated capabilities of the heater elements.
