It may be historically noteworthy that this volume produced by the American Psychiatric Association appears in an era marked by American psychiatry's virtual expulsion of psychoanalysis, not only from its accepted knowledge base, but from the arena of respectable clinical scientific endeavor. On the other hand, with the inclusion of psychologists and social workers, particularly the former, into the ranks of the (once exclusively medical) American Psychoanalytic Association, this currently scorned field may be becoming recognized as a heu-ristically significant source of ideas about human behavior. But whether or not there exists a coherent contemporary American psychoanalysis remains arguable.
