The author of this editorial commentary, Dr. Caroline Breese Hall, died on December 10,2012, at the age of 73, shortly after completion of this editorial on November 29. Dr. Hall was a world leader in pediatric infectious diseases for several decades, specializing in respiratory viruses and human herpes viruses 6 and 7. She was also a founding member of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and served both as its President and Historian. On several occasions, as at the end of this editorial, Dr. Hall ended her work with a poem. When I asked her this time whether her closing verse was by Hall, or by Shakespeare, Milton, Yeats or Frost, she replied "Thy doth bestow great honor, even in jest, to mention such Lordly names in an epistle to such a lowly serf as I". A lowly serf she was not, but rather a towering figure in our field. She will be deeply missed.
