Severe psoriasis vulgaris exhibiting a high serum thymus and activation-regulated chemokine level: Possible association of T-helper 2 conditions

Dear Editor, Psoriasis vulgaris (PV) is one of the most common dermatoses, which is regarded as a T-helper (Th)17-dominant inflammatory disease. Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) is constitutively expressed in the thymus and is produced by activated dendritic cells, endothelial cells, keratinocytes and fibro-blasts. TARC is designated as a Th2-type chemokine and its serum levels reflect the disease activity of atopic dermatitis (AD). In addition, high serum TARC levels are observed in some skin diseases, such as chronic actinic dermatitis, papulo-erythroderma, mycosis fungoides (MF), Sezary syndrome (SS), bullous pemphigoid (BP) and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. In PV, the mean serum TARC levels stay in the normal range.Herein, we report a case of severe erythrodermic PV with a high serum TARC level that paralleled the skin lesion activity during the disease course.
