Acute respiratory distress syndrome due to varicella zoster virus pneumonitis in an immunocompromised patient with herpes zoster

Herpes zoster (HZ) caused by endogenous reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV) occasionally causes serious organ failure due to dissemination of VZV infection in immunocompromised patients.1 We herein present a case of HZ that caused VZV pneumonitis in an immunocompromised patient.A 71-year-old woman with a 2-year history of Waldenstorm macroglobulinemia was referred to us because of a skin eruption. She had a history of chickenpox infection during childhood. Her body temperature was 37.6degC.
