Clinical effectiveness of once-daily levofloxacin for inflammatory acne with high concentrations in the lesions.

The importance of Propionibacterium acnes in the induction and maintenance of the inflammatory phase of acne is established, although the involvement of P. acnes in the pathogenesis of acne is still controversial. Most guidelines recommend oral antibiotics as the primary indication for moderate to severe inflammatory acne. We reported for the first time the effectiveness of levofloxacin (LVFX) for inflammatory acne at a dose of 300 mg t.i.d. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles of fluoroquinolones feature high bioavailability and long serum half-lives, allowing once-daily dosing. To assess the efficacy of once-daily LVFX at higher doses, we performed an open study of once-daily 500 mg LVFX for inflammatory acne.
