摘要

The 2004 presidential debates revealed fundamental differences among Americans about morality and social justice. Fierce fights over different views of acceptable lifestyles, morals, and social values dominated private and public debates, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing "culture wars." In the political arena, the culture wars pose a critical question of whether local, state, and federal laws should be formulated to reflect a particular view of morality when large numbers of persons and groups have sharply different views of what is morally right and wrong. The election results reinforced the reality of social divisions, evidencing what is now popularly referred to as a "red state, blue state" voting pattern.
