Studies on changes in the enzymatic activities were carried out in the leaves of four weeks old plants of rust resistant near-isogenic wheat lines of four Indian wheat cultivars carrying various rust resistance genes and their respective susceptible wheat parents inoculated with respective rust pathogens. During progressive rusts pathogenesis of wheat leaf in both susceptible and resistant interactions increase and decrease in the activity of various enzymes was observed. Inoculated rust resistance near-isogenic lines had higher peroxidase, polyphenol, catalase, chitinase, and amino acid activity compared to healthy controls. However, during later phases of infection the activity declined in the susceptible-interaction whereas it continued to increase in the resistant once. The lipoxygenase activity showed a substantial increase in both susceptible wheat parents and their rust resistance near-isogenic lines with increase in number of days of inoculation, but subsequently declined towards inoculation with leaf rust pathogen in resistant plants, whereas consistent increase was noticed in the susceptible parents.
