Summaries of nursing care-related systematic reviews from the Cochrane library: statins for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

High blood cholesterol level is a risk factor for CVD, which is the number 1 cause of death globally. Statins are the most commonly prescribed drug to reduce cholesterol level for both primary and secondary prevention of CVD. Previous systematic reviews about the use of statins highlight the benefits of reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) events (eg, major coronary events, coronary revascularizations, and stroke) in people with preexisting CVD; however, it is still unclear what the effects of statins are in people with no history of CVD.
