THE COCHRANE LIBRARY AND TENNIS ELBOW: AN OVERVIEW OF REVIEWS

This objective of this study is to summarize Cochrane reviews those assess the effects of interventions for tennis elbow. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was searched for any intervention to treating tennis elbow. Data were extracted in duplicate and the GRADE assessment tool used to analyze the quality of extracted data. Five reviews meet our inclusion criteria, and but ar in poor quality. One review examined topical Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to relieve pain at least in the short term [WMD=-1.88, 95%CI -2.54 to -1.21;RR=0.39,95%CI 0.23 to 0.66)] . No definitive conclusions can be drawn concerning effectiveness of orthotic devices or acupuncture. Shock wave therapy probably provides little or no benefit in terms of improving pain and function. No published controlled trials of surgery were made for tennis elbow. Conclusions: Topical NSAIDs have been shown to offer at least short term (up to four weeks) benefit in improving pain and symptoms.
