Innovative Teaching Methods and Content for Health Administration Education

A number of innovative teaching methods are highlighted in this issue of the Journal. They underscore a focus we have tried to develop-readers sharing insights and lessons about important developments that influence all aspects of healthcare management education at all levels. The first contribution deals with a topic often discussed in trade journals but not frequently seen in academic journals - medical tourism. A compelling case is made for including this content in our coursework. The second contribution to this issue provides a practical approach for conducting a community health assessment and highlights the value of collaboration among programs. The authors of the third manuscript analyzed qualitative information they gathered from their students and identified approaches that might be used to encouraging undergraduate careers in long term care. A fourth paper describes the use of scenarios that allow students to engage in problem-based learning to solve problems commonly faced in healthcare. We close this issue with a semester-long active learning exercise which involves students role playing stakeholder attitudes on the Affordable Care Act within a healthcare management course. We hope that you will consider the value this new content might bring to your program or be encouraged to use a suggested approach in your teaching.
