Obtaining maximum exsanguination of the hand, preserving sterility, and avoiding trauma to the digits: A simple technique

We present a method of exsanguination that combines different techniques, utilizing their benefits and reducing their negative aspects. We routinely place a roll of sterile crepe bandage in the palm after skin preparation and draping, and invite the patient to grip the bandage tightly (Figure 2A). If the patient is anaesthetized, the bandage is simply placed in the palm. A sterile Esmarch bandage is then wrapped around the clenched fist and forearm, exsanguinating the limb (Figure 2B). The tourniquet is inflated.
