Posterior interosseous nerve palsy after needle acupuncture

A review article from the Chinese literature on adverse events related to acupuncture reported four cases of peripheral motor nerve injuries (Zhang et al., 2010). The authors did not mention the specific nerves involved but stated that three of the four injuries resulted in adduction deformities of the thumb. In addition to this review, there have been case reports of acupuncture-related injuries to the facial nerve (Rosted and Woolley, 2007), common peroneal nerve (Sato et al., 2003) and the median nerve (Southworth and Hartwig, 1990).
