It is important to remember that buildings are built to contain people, to give them shelter, pleasure, comfort and an inspiring and healthy environment in which to live, work and enjoy their leisure. This means not only the internal area of the building or built form, but externally, in the surrounding environment as well. Sometimes the building is a statement in the landscape, sometimes it blends so well into the natural environment, it may almost disappear. These days principles of sustainability, access, comfort, healthy buildings, suitability and usability are essential requirements for any building. Our forebears built instinctively for the climate using available local materials; they did not need reminders regarding sustainability etc. With more sophisticated building services and building materials, we sometimes lose sight of why and for whom we are creating buildings.
